Effective Solutions for Concealing Hair Loss

One practical way to disguise hair loss is by using over-the-counter concealers. These products are available in various forms, such as powders or sprays, and are typically made from chemicals or desiccated animal hair with added colours. Concealers are a temporary solution and need to be reapplied at least once a day, sometimes even more frequently.

How Hair Loss Concealers Work

Despite the different application methods, all concealers operate on the same basic principle: they cling to existing thinning or fine hair to make it appear thicker and fuller. This means that concealers can only work if there is enough hair left for them to adhere to. Some concealers also temporarily colour the scalp, further enhancing the illusion of fuller hair.

Application Methods

Concealers are generally delivered as a propelled spray in an aerosol can or a pepper pot-type shaker unit. The spray is designed to deliver a static charge of light electricity during application. When the spray or colour product (animal hair or a paint-like substance) hits the hair, it sticks and creates the illusion of thicker hair. By filling in the gaps between thin hairs with a colour product, less of the exposed scalp skin is visible. Carefully brushing the product, which is often slightly sticky but dries solid, can achieve a hair-like appearance. Some products come with a follow-up fixer spray, similar to strong hairspray, which sets the now thicker-looking hair but hardens it, making it quite stiff and immovable.

Powder-Based Concealers

Some concealers come in the form of a powder. Similar to the spray, the idea is to shake the powder-like coloured product onto bare patches of skin with fine hairs, concealing the skin and giving a fuller effect of thicker-looking hair. However, these powder-based solutions can also take away the natural shine of the hair, making it look very matte. Some users brush the powder into streaks in the hair to create an illusion of fuller hair.

Limitations of Hair Loss Concealers

Temporary concealers won't work for individuals with very little or no hair. Hair loss sufferers using this solution need to retain at least some fine hair and a good covering across the scalp. Without it, the concealer has nothing to adhere to.

Practical Considerations

Using concealers can be limiting in day-to-day activities, as many of them can be washed, rained, blown, or rubbed off. Some people who use concealing products avoid letting anyone get too close to their hair or touch it, fearing it might come off. When touched, the hair can feel like paint, depending on the specific product. Bed linen and clothing can often be stained if the concealer isn't washed out before going to bed. This can lead to increased self-consciousness about hair loss rather than boosting confidence. Some users find their morning routine more complicated and stressful, as they have to invest more time in making their hair look realistic. Concealer users report taking up to 45 minutes to achieve a workable effect.

Side Effects

Some individuals may experience allergic reactions to the chemicals used in concealer sprays and powders.

Cost of Hair Loss Concealers

Concealers can be relatively inexpensive. Some powders are priced around £15 – £40 per unit, with sprays in a similar price range. However, since they need to be applied frequently, users may end up using large quantities of these products and spending more money in the long run. Many companies offer bulk purchasing or a monthly payment plan for a year at a time.

Success Rate

The success rate of concealers is generally low to poor. Concealers are easily detectable from close up, prone to coming away, and only work if there is enough hair left on the scalp to start with.
